Nau, Nau, Maria - Alice Azevedo

Nau, Nau, Maria! — Alice Azevedo

It was in a trapped sphere, all angled, with no castle in sight, under the blue satin without swallows, that they left Lisbon. They discovered little, and learned nothing. Not so much of grandeur, nor of value, was this trip composed – it was mainly blood, sweat and tears. And so little of that salt even came from Portugal. They ended up getting stuck in some low speeches. Legend has it that even today these castaways insist that it is there, lost on the high seas, that their history resides.

Nau Nau, Maria, from the História Trágico-Marítima, proposes itself as a troubled voyage for what was the greatest Portuguese misadventure.
