Esquecimento — Teatro da Cidade

When we think about the concept of forgetting, we automatically feel a little complicit in this desire. Wanting to be forgotten, this right, this need, or even this restlessness, appears to us as a starting point to reflect on what contemporary society impels us to the contrary: eternity, memory, and recognition.
On the other hand, at a time when various social instruments, the media, social networks, records, or internet archives, rummage our relationship with memory, leaving the stamp of an illness or an error, a decision, or a citation reappear throughout the life of an individual as an impediment or definer of his personality, tracking to the point of reducing the possibility of disappearance – or forgetting, the question arises: what is the legitimacy for something or someone to be forgotten?
The show “Esquecimento” is the new collective creation of Teatro da Cidade. It is born from the Right to Oblivion, present in the New Charter of Human Rights in the Digital Age.

ABOUT TEATRO DA CIDADE

Teatro da Cidade was founded in 2015 by Bernardo Souto, Guilherme Gomes, João Reixa, Nídia Roque and Rita Cabaço. Teatro da Cidade has been developing its work focusing on the importance of the text for the creation of a show, using works from the world dramaturgy repertoire, and looking for the production of original texts that it creates for the shows (“Topografia”, “que boa ideia, virmos para as montanhas”, “Agora, que o carro do sol já passou”, “Karoshi”, “Lamento de Ĉiela”). Since 2019, it maintains in Viseu the CRETA project – theatrical creation laboratory, with the support of the Municipality of Viseu.
